This past Sunday was girls day; three moms and three daughters (ages 14 and 15), went whitewater rafting. It was a beautiful day, sunny, warm but not to hot, a mild breeze and low humidity. Just perfect weather. The six of us were given the only pink boat and laughingly we called ourselves "Pink Power"!

We navigated the class 1, 2, and 3 rapids without a guide for the three hour trip. We got hung up on rocks a couple of times and had to work our way out. Once we got the hang of it, we could "spin out", all shift to one side of the raft, or get out and push - depending on the situation and location. During one of the breaks a couple of the girls went body surfing through a set of rapids. By the time we reached the class 3 rapids, we navigated them with ease. (Boy is there a big difference between class 2 and class 3 rapids!)

The look on our daughters' faces as we floated out of the rapids was pure joy. They had smiles from ear to ear, looks of amazement in their eyes, and an expression of "can we do this again?" The Moms? We felt extremely proud of them and ourselves!

Life is an Adventure

Ask a handful of friends, family, and colleagues the following question, "How do you think I would spend my time if I had more time?" Or, you might want to ask, "Do you know what I like to do in my spare time?" It will be interesting to hear the responses - to learn how well all of these people really know you.

Sadly, many people rarely, if ever, have a chance to spend time doing what they enjoy doing. As a result, those around you don't know what would bring you pleasure or how they can support your interests. Not spending time doing what you enjoy doing is like not plugging in your cell phone to recharge. Without recharging your cell phone it won't work and the same holds true for you.

So, what recharges you -- traveling, gardening, hiking, kayaking, skiing, cooking, backpacking, scrapbooking, woodworking, or whitewater rafting? Take some time this week and recharge. Not only have you earned it, you need it. Go ahead, recharge... and stop feeling guilty about it!

Our kitchens are pretty easy to keep organized. Thanks to tools like silverware trays, we know where to put thing. By now, the silverware tray of your office - the tickler system - is now set up, right? You’ve got those tickler folders working, and you are getting used to having them capture all of your "to-dos", ideas, and thoughts. Have you noticed how much clearer you are thinking now? Getting all of that stuff off of your desk and out of your head lightens your load.

Now, just a few quick tips on prioritizing all of that info in your tickler:

  • Prioritize tomorrow’s work at the end of every work day. As they say, "you’ll sleep on it". If however, this strategy keeps you up at night – ditch it! Prioritizing first thing in the morning is just fine.
  • Once you've prioritized, take an honest look at your workload. If it's more than you have time to get done today, take the lowest priority, select a day that you will work on it, and drop it in the respective tickler folder. Keep doing this until you have a workload that you are comfortable with. Remember, if you finish everything in today's folder, you can always work on tomorrows folder!
  • On the other hand, if you are feeling too overwhelmed with everything you need to get done, just put three items (yes three!) in today's folder. Keep doing that until you stop feeling so overwhelmed. It may take a week, a month, or even longer – yet remember, every day you will be working on your top three priorities – and best of all you will be getting them done. I bet most of your colleagues can’t say that!
  • You can re-prioritize your workload during the day based on new incoming information. Times that you’ll want to do this? After a meeting, when the boss gives you an urgent deliverable, when you've had a few minutes to catch up with e-mails. You get the idea.
  • Don't forget to check out the tools and articles on prioritization in the GO System Resource Library which you can find at: www.gosystemresources.com

Have a productive day!

Productivity Pointer: View Word Documents Side by Side

Do you ever need to look at Word documents side by side to make comparisons? Check out this east way to do it:

  1. Open both of the Word documents that you want to view together.
  2. In one of the files you want, click on the View tab.
  3. In the Window section, choose View Side by Side.
  4. If you have more than 2 opened Word documents, a box will appear listing the Word documents that are open (excluding the one you are in).
  5. Choose the file you want to be seen along-side of the one you have.

Both documents will appear together. Now you can work in either one of them, scrolling down to the areas that you want. If you select the Synchronous Scrolling in the View menu, both documents will scroll simultaneously when you are scrolling in one of the documents.
